Dave Landes Quiz
Here is the quiz from the June Research Committee meeting:
- A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, he was a player (pitcher and first baseman), manager and owner. He was one of the first innovators to play first base off of the bag. As an owner, he moved a Western League club to a then National League-only city. He was one of the key principles in the founding of the American League.
- A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, his baseball career included at least 20 years each as a pitcher, manager, and team owner, the only person to do so. He was initially a minority team owner before mortgaging his Montana ranch to buy a majority share of the team. During his time as owner, his team won three league pennants and one World Series.
- Born before the Civil War, his work career included time in publishing, architecture and bookkeeping. His first positions in baseball included selling tickets, score cards, and pennants. He saved money and eventually bought into this team as a part-owner before eventually becoming sole owner. During his time as owner, his team won four league pennants but no World Series, thus establishing a trend for post-season futility. Hes credited with several baseball innovations including Ladies Day, rain checks and the 2-3-2 World Series format.
- As a team owner for 27 years, his team won one pennant and no World Series during his tenure as an owner. He served a brief time as a New York City Police Commissioner before entering the hat-making business in another east coast city. As part of a baseball team ownership group, he was elected team president after the death of another co-owner. He was a notoriously cheap owner, sometimes using goats to trim the grass in his team’s ballpark. He sold a future Hall of Fame pitcher to the Cubs rather than increase his salary.
- He was the third generation in his family to run the family brewery after being elected President and CEO upon the death of his brother. By the mid-twentieth century, the brewery was the largest in the world. To avert a possible move to Houston, he purchased a major league baseball team to keep it in his home city. This team would go on to win six league pennants and three World Series during his time as team owner.
- An American inventor, industrialist, and entrepreneur, the companies he owned built cars and radios carrying his last name. Radios with his last name can still be purchased today. He purchased his home-town team during the depression when the previous owner lost much of his wealth in the 1929 Wall Street crash. During his tenure as owner, his team won two league pennants and one World Series. He was a pioneer in broadcasting baseball on the radio.
- A lawyer, philanthropist, civic leader and NFL team owner, he was one of the founders of the Continental Baseball League. After failing to attract an established major league franchise to his home city, he was successful in attracting an expansion franchise. This franchise has retired his Name along with the numbers of several players and managers.
- A sportswriter and columnist, hes a member of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame. He helped his city obtain an AFL football franchise and a major league baseball expansion franchise. He often wrote columns about his black lab, Abe, and a statue of he and Abe was erected in the city.
- Born in South Dakota, he moved to a neighboring state to attend college. Entering politics in this state a few years after graduating, he lost his first election running for mayor. He went on to win elections at the local level (mayor), state level (US Senator) and federal level (Vice President).
- This British Army officer, was a hero of the French and Indian War in the 18th Century. An expedition named with his last name, ventured into what is now Pennsylvania. This expedition established alliances with Native American tribes and defeated the French in the battle of Fort Duquesne.
