History

The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) was founded August 10, 1971 when sixteen historians and researchers, led by L. Robert Davids of Washington, D. C., met in Cooperstown, New York.

The Cooperstown 16 adopted five objectives for the new organization:

• To foster the study of baseball as a significant American social and athletic institution.
• To stimulate interest in baseball as our National Pastime.
• To establish an accurate historical account of baseball through the years.
• To coordinate and facilitate the dissemination of baseball research information.
• To cooperate in safeguarding the proprietary interests of individual research efforts.

Halsey Hall Chapter of SABR

The first gathering of SABR members in the Upper Midwest took place in August 1981. At the regional meeting in May 1985 those in attendance organized themselves into a formal chapter, taking the name of Halsey Hall, longtime writer, broadcaster, and baseball ambassador.

The Halsey Hall Chapter of SABR hosts two chapter meetings and a Hot Stove League gathering each year; publishes a monthly newsletter; fields a 19th-century re-creation base ball team, the Quicksteps; and promotes numerous activities such as tours and excursions to events of baseball significance. The chapter also hosted the 1988 national SABR convention in Minneapolis.
