The Halsey Hall chapter book club’s next selection is Roger Maris: Baseball’s Reluctant Hero by Tom Clavin and Danny Peary. Harmon Killebrew, who died May 17, was the featured guest at our fall chapter meeting in 1999. Harmon was fourth on the career home run list for nearly a year. He moved past Mickey Mantle for the number-four spot with his 537th home run on September 5, 1972 and held the spot until Frank Robinson passed him August 17, 1973. Harmon remained fifth on the list for more than 25 years, until Mark McGwire passed him August 11, 2001.

The Twins held a memorial service for Harmon at Target Field May 27.

Your trusty crusty editor is now rusty after a couple of days in the hospital, from where this issue of The Holy Cow! has been written and distributed. I had a bad landing while skydiving on June 4 and broke a vertebra. I should be out by the time the Twins return home on June 9.

Before getting rusty, your crusty editor and Paul Rittenhouse, who works for the airlines and was able to arrange low-cost stand-by flights, took a day-trip to Cleveland on Thursday, June 2 to see Bob Feller’s grave.
