Cow Chips
Howard Luloff did the public-address announcing for the Section 5AA Track and Field Meet at Washburn High School in Minneapolis. . . . Ray Luurs was in line at Marquette Bank in downtown Minneapolis on May 30 when the person in front of him robbed the bank. . . . Mark Johnson got a foul ball off the bat of Jeff Bagwell at the June 12 Twins-Astros game. . . . Jerry Janzen caught a slew of northerns, ranging from 4 to 15 pounds, while on a fishing trip north of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He then went with his wife, Robin, and daughter Laura on a trip to Branson, Missouri, while his other daughter, Annie, went to Paris. . . . A Halsey Hall Legacy
Ted Hathaway reports that Terry Smith, while indexing issues of Baseball Magazine for SABR’s The Baseball Index, came across an interesting letter to the editor that appeared in the October 1915 issue. The author of the letter? Seventeen-year-old Halsey Hall.

Here’s what Halsey had to say:

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.

DEAR SIR — For many years For many years I have been an interested reader of your great magazine. Every article in it is enjoyable to me and especially the “Letter Box” section. I do think, however, that since you give fans the privilege of writing for publication, they might cease knocking other writers like themselves and also various articles in the magazine which they do not happen to like.

I have sent a “Baseball Alphabet” in rhyme and hope it will meet with your approval.

“A” is for Archer, who pegs like a shot.
“B” is for Bush (Joe), who shoots them in hot.
“C” is for Cobb and Crawford, a dangerous pair.
“D” stands for Daubert, who swats ‘em for fair.
“E” is for Evers, who plays second sack.
“F” is for Fletcher, who always talks back.
“G” is for Gandil, who plays first base right.
“H” is for Herzog, his team’s in a plight.
“I” is for Indians, who are down in the race.
“J” is for Jackson, who hits at some pace.
“K” stands for Kauff, the Federals’ best.
“L” is for Lajoie, who’ll stand any test.
“M” is for Mathewson, all join in his praise.
“N” is for Niehoff, who has hitting ways.
“O” is for Oldring, an Athletic man.
“P” is for Perdue, of the Cardinal clan.
“Q” is for Quigley, that scrappy old umps.
“R” is for Rucker, who doesn’t get many bumps.
“S” is for Speaker, who clouts that old sphere.
“T” is for Tesreau, whom all the teams fear.
“U” is impossible, this fact you can’t doubt.
“V” is for Veach, who surely can clout.
“W” is for Wagner, that grand old man.
   “X” I can’t guess, and nobody can.
“Y” is for Yankees, losing games is their feast.
“Z” is for Zimmerman, last but not least.

With best wishes for your magazine and the “Great National Game,” I remain

Respectfully yours,
HALSEY L. HALL
