Chapter and Member News

The Halsey Hall Chapter fall meeting drew 30 members to Faith Mennonite Church on October 25. The meeting included research presentations by Sarah Johnson, Phil Lowry, Mike Haupert, and Bob Tholkes. Baseball analyst Brandon Warne was the featured speaker.

During the business meeting, a proposed revision to Article II, Section 2 of the by-laws was approved. The section now reads:

ARTICLE II: PUBLICATIONS AND WEB SITE
Section 2-Publication Editors/Webmaster/Social Media Director
The editor(s) of chapter publications, the webmaster (and assistant webmasters, if appropriate), and director of social media shall be appointed by the board of directors to a term of one year. The term shall start January 1. The term is renewable.

The Research Committee will meet at the Hennepin County Southdale Library, 7001 York Avenue South, Edina 55435 at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 12 and Monday, February 23. For more information, contact Brenda Himrich or Sarah Johnson.

The 100th Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, was held November 1. The 101st breakfast will be January 3.

The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club will meet Saturday, December 6 at 9:30 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville to discuss Voices of the Game: The First Full-Scale Overview of Baseball Broadcasting, 1921 to the Present by Curt Smith. In addition, the group will discuss the telecast of the 1978 Yankees-Red Sox tiebreaker game. The complete game is available for viewing on YouTube: 1978 AL East Playoff: Yankees @ Red Sox.

Sarah Johnson had an article on her baseball trip to Quad Cities in the travel section of the October 25, 2014 Star Tribune.

Roger Godin presented at the fall meeting of the Society for International Hockey Research in Sherbrooke, Quebec, in November. Roger’s topic was, “Enroute to St. Moritz Gold: Boston’s University Club Steals One from the Toronto Grads.”

George Rekela has had a book, A History of Professional Hockey in Minnesota: From the North Stars to the Wild, published by The History Press. The book is available online and in stores and is also available as an e-book.
