John Thorn to Appear at Fitzgerald Theater: Group Tickets Available

Noted SABR member John Thorn, who was recently named official baseball historian for Major League Baseball, will be at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul on Tuesday, March 29 at 7:30 for a conversation with Garrison Keillor about John’s new book, Baseball in the Garden of Eden: The Secret History of the Early Game.

The Fitzgerald Theater is offering the Halsey Hall Chapter a special group rate of $10 per ticket with a two-for-one offer, meaning that the tickets will be only $5 each as long as at least 10 are purchased. Those interested may send $5 (make checks out to Stew Thornley) to Stew Thornley, 1082 Lovell Avenue, Roseville, Minnesota 55113-4419. The money must be received by Wednesday, March 23 so the tickets can be purchased on Thursday.

Plan to meet at the Fitzgerald Theater, 10 Exchange Street East in St. Paul, at 6:30 p.m. on March 29 to pick up your tickets or make arrangements to get the tickets prior to then.

Tickets Available for Twins Game in Conjunction with May 14 Chapter Meeting

The 2011 Halsey Hall Chapter spring meeting will be Saturday, May 14, and the group will attend the Twins-Blue Jays game, which starts at 3:10 p.m. The tickets are Home Plate View and are $23 each. Anyone wanting a ticket may send payment (make checks out to Howard Luloff) by April 11 to Howard Luloff, 251 Yosemite Circle, #2, Golden Valley, Minnesota 55422.

The chapter meeting will be at the Grace University Lutheran Church, 324 Harvard Street SE, Minneapolis, 612-331-0125. Parking is in lot AA, across Harvard Street from the church. The meeting will begin at 9:00 (registration at 8:00) with research presentations and a featured guest in the morning.

Registration for the meeting is $10, which includes lunch. There is also a meeting-only price of $5. Those wanting lunch must RSVP to Howard Luloff at 763-208-1637, hfan77@webtv.net, by May 7.

At the business meeting during lunch, four members will be elected to the chapter’s board of directors to succeed outgoing directors Kevin Hennessy, George Rekela, Fred Buckland, and Scot Johnson. Anyone interested in running for a two-year term may contact Nominating Committee Chair Art Mugalian at 612-721-2825, amugalian@comcast.net. Anyone interested in running for the board is asked to send a candidate statement to Art.

Two research presentations have been submitted and approved so far: Kevin Hennessy will present Rollie Hemsley and the First Anonymity Break for Alcoholics Anonymous, and Armand Peterson will make a presentation on the article he is writing for the 2012 SABR convention on the history of amateur and semi-pro baseball in Minnesota.

One more slot remains for a presentation, and members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research presentation at the meeting. Proposals must be made in writing (e-mail is fine) to Research Committee Chair Stew Thornley, 1082 Lovell Avenue, Roseville, Minnesota 55113-4419, and should include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule. The Research Committee (which also consists of Dan Levitt, Cary Smith, Bob Tholkes, and Rich Arpi) will finalize the schedule of research presentations by April 30, two weeks before the meeting, so proposals must be submitted by then.
