Lexington Park Plaque Unveiled Again
A plaque, originally purchased by the Halsey Hall Chapter of SABR in 1994, was unveiled August 12 in the plaza of the TCF Bank on the former site of Lexington Park, home of the St. Paul Saints from 1897 to 1956. The chapter raised money from former Saints players and fans to purchase and erect a plaque on a building on the site 12 years ago after the original commemorative marker for the ballpark disappeared. When the buildings on the site were demolished a few years ago, the chapter got the plaque back and gave it to TCF Bank, which was constructing a new branch on the site. Stan Williams pitched the final game at Lexington Park, shutting out the Minneapolis Millers. Although Williams was unable to attend the ceremony, he wrote a letter with his memories of the ballpark and St. Paul, and comments from his letter were read to a crowd of approximately 40 people, which included 15 chapter members. Jose Torres, Brian Whinnery, and Billy Cox of the current St. Paul Saints were also on hand along with local dignitary Wally the Beerman for the unveiling.

The ubiquitous Pete Gorton was on the Fox North Sports Twins’ pre-game show on July 29, the eve of the Hall of Fame induction, to talk about John Donaldson, one of the players considered for induction by the Negro Leagues/pre-Negro Leagues Committee. Pete and the Donaldson network were also the feature of an article on mlb.com by Justice Hill. The article is available by clicking here.
