May 2014 Editor:
Former Twins shortstop Roy Smalley was the featured speaker at the spring meeting of the Halsey Hall Chapter March 29. Popular as a guest in the past, Roy was a hit again with the audience, regaling them with stories of success with the University of Southern California Trojans, turmoil and wackiness with Billy Martin on the Texas Rangers, and his years with the Twins, when he became an all-star. Scott Cummings, Lee Temanson, Howard Luloff, Jeff Lenz, John Gallo, Roger Godin, Steve Ginader, Scot Johnson, Josh Ostergaard, Brian Madigan, Tom Flynn, Art Mugalian, Bob Komoroski, Dave Jensen, Gregg Nelson, Fred Buckland, Brenda Himrich, Aaron Sinner, Gene Gomes, I. P. Dailey, Bob Tholkes, Dan Levitt, Jerry Janzen, Sarah Johnson, Fritz Reeker, Frank Kadwell, George Rekela, Anthony Bush, Jed Levitt attended the meeting, which included research presentations by Stew Thornley on baseball in Bloomington, Lee Temanson on Steve Dalkowski, and Dan Levitt on the Kansas City Royals baseball academy. During the business meeting Jerry Janzen, Gene Gomes, and Steve Ginader were elected to the chapter board of directors to succeed outgoing directors Janzen, Dave Jensen, and Howard Luloff. Upcoming activities: The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club will meet Saturday, June 14 at 9:30 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville to discuss The Curse of Rocky Colavito: A Loving Look at a Thirty-Year Slump by Terry Pluto. In addition, the group will discuss the telecast of Game Seven of the 1991 World Series. The complete game is available for purchase from iTunes or for viewing on YouTube: 1991 World Series, Game 7: Braves @ Twins. The Research Committee will meet Monday, May 19 and Monday, June 16 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hennepin County Southdale Library, 7001 York Avenue South, Edina 55435. For more information, contact Brenda Himrich or Sarah Johnson. The committee is continuing with its Spread of Baseball project, started by Rich Arpi. Two webpages have information on the spread of baseball, Pre-pro Baseball and Pre-pro Clubs and Games in Minnesota. The Research Committee will also be coordinating poster presentations at future chapter meetings. Road trip: This years Northwoods League outing will be Saturday, June 14 to Rochester to see the Honkers play the Alexandria Blue Anchors at 7:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Kyle Traynor, a gynecologist and incoming back-up official scorer for Twins games, is the official scorer for Rochester. The group will gather at 3:00 at Doug Skippers, 13984 Ember Way, Apple Valley 55124, 612-876-1408. The group will form carpools and depart for Rochester from there. Contact Doug or Stew Thornley, 651-415-0791 if you plan to go. Indicate if you will be able to drive and carry others or if you will need to ride with someone else.
The position of social media director will be appointed by the board of directors on an annual basis. Tom and the board will develop procedures for the position and policies for Facebook and Twitter.
Bob Evanss appearance on Antiques Roadshow in 2004 was memorable enough that Twin Cities Public Television used a photo from it to promote an upcoming episode. Bob had brought a jersey worn by Willie Mays with the Minneapolis Millers to the show when it was taped in St. Paul and got it appraised at more than $60,000. Bob later sold the jersey through an auction house for an undisclosed amount. Josh Ostergaard has a launch party for his book, The Devils Snake Curve: A Fans Notes from Left Field, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30 at the Harriet Brewing Tap Room, 3036 Minnehaha Avenue in Minneapolis. Activities will include wiffleball, baseball trivia, and lawn games. Seth C. Dr. Fan Hawkins attended the Dodgers-Diamondbacks series in March at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the 77th ballpark he has seen a regular-season major-league game. He reported that the Coriolis effect applies only to fluids; at least he noted the Clayton Kershaw’s curveball, even in the southern hemisphere, still broke in toward right-handed hitters. The only ballpark used in Dr. Fans lifetime where he has not attended a game was League Park in Cleveland. On May 7, Dr. Fan plans to ride the first train out of Union Station in St. Paul, going to Minot and returning the next day. Anthony Bush has written an article on the many Dukes of Duluth, Zenith City Online: Baseballs Many Duluth Dukes.
