Upcoming Events

Tom Edwards in seats from the Polo GroundsThe Halsey Hall Chapter has a trip planned to see a baseball memorabilia room at the home of Tom Edwards in Forest Lake on Saturday, December 15. Tom has assembled an impressive collection that includes restored seats from the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field. Those interested in attending may meet at the home of Stew Thornley and Brenda Himrich, 1082 Lovell Avenue in Roseville at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, and the group will carpool from there.

The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club will meet Saturday, December 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville to discuss Where They Ain’t: The Fabled Life and Untimely Death of the Original Baltimore Orioles, the Team That Gave Birth to Modern Baseball by Burt Solomon.

The next Fred Souba Hot Stove Saturday Morning, an informal breakfast gathering for the purpose of talking baseball, will be at 9:00 on January 12 at Bakers Square in Richfield (66th Street to the east of Xerxes Avenue).

The annual Hot Stove League meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, February 2 at 7 p.m. Davanni’s, 1905 Perimeter Drive, Roseville 55113 (northwest of Minn. Hwy. 36 and Fairview Avenue), 651-636-3411. The event will include a trivia quiz by Howard Luloff and a Dead or Alive? quiz.

The Spring Chapter Meeting will Saturday, April 20 at the Faith Mennonite Church in south Minneapolis, where topless women have been known to roam the neighborhood.

Members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research presentation at the meeting. Proposals must be made in writing (e-mail is fine) to Research Committee Chair Rich Arpi, 2445 Londin Lane E., Unit 410, Maplewood, Minnesota 55119-5547, and should include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule. The Research Committee (which also consists of Dan Levitt, Stew Thornley, Sarah Johnson, Brenda Himrich, and Bob Tholkes) will finalize the schedule of research presentations by April 6, two weeks before the meeting, so proposals must be submitted by then.

During the business meeting, four members will be elected to the chapter’s board of directors to succeed outgoing directors Art Mugalian, Fred Buckland, Gary DeSmith, and Brenda Himrich. Anyone interested in running for a two-year term may contact Nominating Committee Chair Brenda Himrich at 651-415-0791.

Research Projects

Anthony Bush has written a pair of articles, one on Duluth’s First Pro Baseball Team: 1886 Champions and the other a biography, The Maurice Gorham—“Spike.”

Terry Bohn has written biographies of Elmer Leifer and Charlie Boardman for the SABR BioProject.

Rich Arpi, chair of the Halsey Hall Chapter Research Committee, has been recruiting members for a local project chronicling the birth of baseball in various cities in Minnesota and beyond to assist with a larger Spread of Baseball project.

Rich has already uncovered information on Early Baseball in Minnesota, and several other members are getting involved. Sarah Johnson is searching for the first appearance of baseball in Chisholm and neighboring cities, Brenda Himrich is investigating Winona, and her husband is sniffing around Sauk Centre. Joel Rippel has taken on Martin and surrounding counties, and Armand Peterson will be getting involved in the project, as well.

Rich reports that Terry Bohn has completed a 12-page paper on early baseball in Bismarck, North Dakota, and Rich has been expanding on research he has done on teams in Hibbing and Virginia from the early 20th century.

Anyone interested in learning more or in participating may contact Rich Arpi, 651-739-6986.
