Fall Chapter Meeting and Other Upcoming Events
The 2017 Fall Chapter meeting will be Saturday, November 4 at Faith Mennonite Church, 2720 E. 22nd Street in south Minneapolis.
Registration for the meeting is at 8:30 with research presentations beginning at 9:00. A business meeting will be held during lunch with a featured guest to follow. The cost for the meeting and lunch is $10. The meeting only is $5. Those wanting lunch must RSVP to Howard Luloff, 952-922-5036.
Lloyd Kepple reports that Dick Stigman is interested in attending as a featured guest. Dick, a noted Minnesota player who pitched for the Twins in the 1960s, has been interested in the past but has had to demur for various reasons. His attendance at this time is tentative but hopeful.
Members are invited to submit a proposal to make a research presentation at the meeting. Proposals must be sent to Research Committee co-chairs Brenda Himrich or Sarah Johnson and include a title and brief outline of what the presentation will consist of with emphasis on the research that will be included. Standard presentations are 20 minutes (with an additional eight minutes for questions) although the duration may be longer or shorter depending on the needs of the presenter and of the schedule. The Research Committee (which also consists of Dan Levitt, Jim Cox, Doug Skipper, Stew Thornley, Rich Arpi, and Bob Tholkes) will finalize the schedule of research presentations two weeks before the meeting, so proposals must be submitted by then.
Three proposals have been approved so far:
- John Gallo: The 1957 St. Paul Saints
- Sarah Johnson: When Baseballs Winter Meetings Came to Minneapolis
- Bob Tholkes: Speculations on the Origins of Baseball Umpiring
Research note: A good place to start with any research project is the Halsey Hall Chapter Baseball Research Primer.
The Halsey Hall Chapter Book Club will meet Saturday, August 5 at 9:30 a.m. at the usual spot, Barnes & Noble in Har Mar Mall in Roseville. The book selection is Storied Stadiums: Baseballs History Through Its Ballparks by Curt Smith. The group will also discuss the Highlights from the 1959 World Series, produced by Sports History Channel and narrated by Vin Scully. It is available on You Tube: 1959 World Series Highlights

July Road Trips Recap
A double-digit contingent went to Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato July 15 for a Northwoods League game preceded by a meeting with Mankato manager Ryan Kragh and broadcaster Charlie Snelson as well as a trivia contest. Triviamaster Howard Luloff reported that the winning score of 92-1 by Team Janzen-Thornley set a record for widest margin of victory.
Eight members and guests went to Thunder Bay July 29. A few went to Hillcrest Park for a nice view of the Sleeping Giant (above) and all were at Port Arthur Stadium to see the Mankato MoonDogs beat the Thunder Bay Border Cats 13-8.
No more road trips are planned, but several members are planning on attending the state amateur tournament. A couple of games planned are:
- Friday, August 25 at 5 p.m. in Norwood Young America
- Sunday, August 27 at noon in Hamburg
